GitHub Copilot will deprecate selected models on November 16; Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 suggested
On October 15, 2026 GitHub said Claude Opus 4.8, Claude Opus 5 and GPT-5.6 Terra will be deprecated across Copilot experiences on November 16, 2026, with named alternatives.

GitHub announced in its Changelog on October 15, 2026 that on November 16, 2026 it will deprecate Claude Opus 4.8, Claude Opus 5 and GPT-5.6 Terra across all GitHub Copilot experiences, including Copilot Chat, inline edits, ask and agent modes, and code completions.
Suggested alternatives are Claude Opus 5.5 for both Claude Opus 4.8 and Claude Opus 5, and GPT-6.1 Sol or GPT-6 Luna for GPT-5.6 Terra. GitHub notes that Claude Opus 4.8 remains available to individual Copilot subscribers on annual plans so they retain an Opus offering; that exception does not apply to other customer types.
Users should update workflows and integrations before the date. Under default model enablement, suggested alternatives are automatically enabled for Copilot Enterprise and Business unless an administrator turned off the global default or disabled the model; if the global default is off, alternatives can be enabled via model policies in Copilot settings. No action is required to remove models after deprecation.
