Anthropic donates Agent Skills to the AAIF after MCP
Anthropic is donating the Agent Skills open standard to the Agentic AI Foundation under the Linux Foundation. It says more than 70 agent platforms have integrated the standard since December 2025, with about 1 million skills published and nearly 280 million installs. The name, logo, GitHub org, and agentskills.io domain move with it; use and contribution do not require AAIF membership.

Anthropic says it is donating Agent Skills—the open standard that gives AI agents specialized knowledge and workflows—to the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF). A skill is a folder with a SKILL.md file plus any scripts or reference material. Anthropic says the format grew out of Claude Code work, and after an October 2025 launch developers quickly shipped loaders for Codex, Cursor, and OpenCode before Agent Skills was published as an open standard under its own GitHub org and domain.
Per Anthropic: since the December 2025 standard release, more than 70 platforms—including ChatGPT, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, and VS Code—have integrated Agent Skills, with about 1 million skills published and nearly 280 million installs. The company is donating the Agent Skills name and logo, the GitHub organization, and the agentskills.io domain, and says you can keep using or contributing without joining the AAIF.
On governance, Anthropic says the AAIF sits under the Linux Foundation, was co-founded with Block and OpenAI last year, and previously received the Model Context Protocol (MCP). Engineers from Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, and others will maintain the standard as individuals, with David Soria Parra and Mahesh Murag as Lead Maintainers. A proposed roadmap covers versioned releases, a formal proposal process, and security guidance for authors and installers.
