Anthropic Public Benefit Fund: 5% of shares now, plus 2% per 50% valuation rise
On 18 Oct 2026 Anthropic announced the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund. Subject to stockholder approval it commits 5% of shares immediately, and the board may add 2% for each 50% rise in company value above a set baseline; with founder and employee pledges, about 20% of shares are directed to public benefit.

On 18 October 2026 Anthropic said it will place a portion of its shares in a new Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, structured as a wholly owned LLC rather than a 501(c)(3) so it can move between donations and direct distributions. Subject to stockholder approval, 5% of shares are committed today, with an additional 2% at the board’s discretion for every 50% increase in company value above a set baseline. CNBC reported the same day that the baseline has not yet been disclosed.
Anthropic says the fund could make large gifts to traditional nonprofits or direct distributions to specific populations, citing labor-market impacts: it has already committed $200 million to study and address the issue, but “bolder approaches may be needed.” Equity held by the LLC will not be used for lobbying or political giving in the US or abroad.
The company frames the move as building on founders’ pledges to donate 80% of their equity and an employee equity-donation match (about half of employees participate). Combined with today’s commitment, roughly 20% of Anthropic shares would be dedicated to the public good, plus any later milestone add-ons. More detail on structure, governance and milestones is promised in the coming months, along with a public benefit progress report.
