Google Play opens a personal-app route without a developer account
Android apps built in AI Studio can now begin reaching their creator’s device through Google Play without joining the public catalog. The initial rollout is for adults in selected markets; friends-and-family sharing is still to come.

Google began rolling out a personal-app route on October 13. After building an Android app in AI Studio, users can run it on their own device through Google Play with a standard Google account and no developer registration. Apps stay outside the public store catalog. Initial access is limited to users aged 18 or older in selected markets including the US; the full country list and rollout completion date have not been announced.
The change is the distribution and installation route. AI Studio’s native Android generation, browser emulator and developer-account internal testing were announced in May. This update separates personal use from professional publishing. Google plans to add sharing with a small circle of friends and family in the coming months; public distribution still requires a professional developer account and normal safety reviews and quality standards.
Removing developer registration does not establish that every build or runtime feature is free. Google’s billing documentation says AI Studio usage remains free unless a paid API key is linked for paid features; free-tier usage is also subject to model-specific limits. The new personal route does not disclose numerical build or app limits, and the older internal-testing route’s 100-tester ceiling should not be applied to it.
Google’s simulated screen also says that personal apps can only be seen and installed by their creator and are not reviewed by Google Play. The convenience of a personal library therefore does not mean generated code has a store quality or security endorsement. Users should still check what an app does before relying on it with important data.
