Qwen-Image-2.1 combines generation and transparent editing; commercial use needs authorization
Qwen-Image-2.1 combines image generation, local editing and transparent backgrounds, with up to ten reference images. Its available weights use a research license; commercial projects need separate authorization.

Qwen released Qwen-Image-2.1 on September 20, combining text-to-image generation, edits to existing images and transparent-layer handling in one model. Output can include an RGBA alpha channel, allowing a subject to be placed into another image, while edits can preserve a transparent background.
The model accepts up to ten reference images and supports selections, painted regions and separate masks for local edits. Generation and editing can therefore be connected when repeatedly adjusting a person, product or part of an asset. The model card's 7B parameter figure refers to the visual generation component, not the combined size of all associated components.
A key condition applies before downloading the weights: they use the Qwen Research License, and commercial purposes require separate authorization. Research availability and commercial permission must be determined from the license, not inferred from public weights or a general description of the model as open source.
