Gemini 3.8 Live lets voice assistants keep talking while tools run
Google’s updated real-time voice models can process visual input and run background tools during a conversation. The complex-task variant can speak progress updates, with API, enterprise and consumer access at different rollout stages.

Google announced Gemini 3.8 Live and Gemini 3.8 Live Extended Thinking on September 15 local time, with a further source update on September 17. Live focuses on scale and cost efficiency; Extended Thinking handles more complex, multi-step reasoning.
The models address a break in many voice workflows: an assistant stops acting while it talks, or goes silent while it works. According to Google, an assistant can process visual input and switch languages while calling tools in the background. Extended Thinking can also describe progress aloud while reasoning. Queries and reservations may therefore support a continuous conversation, although the application still needs to confirm that the tool actually completed its action.
Google cites a voice quality index score of 82.6 from Artificial Analysis and a 68.6% task completion result in τ-Voice for Extended Thinking. The two measures cover different capabilities and cannot be combined into an overall accuracy rate. AiEvent has not independently rerun the cited tests.
At launch, access through the Gemini API, Google AI Studio, enterprise private previews and consumer products was at different stages. Some enterprise and Workspace features were still forthcoming; model and tool availability depends on the product and account permissions.
