New Claude Cowork tasks move to the cloud for Pro and Max users

Starting October 6, new Cowork tasks on Pro and Max run on Anthropic’s cloud; tasks already started locally stay on the computer. Connected local files still require the desktop app, and fetched copies are deleted with the session.

From October 6, new Cowork tasks on Pro and Max run in Anthropic’s cloud, and the local-only setting is removed. Existing local tasks stay on their original computer. Cloud work can continue after the computer closes and resume across desktop, web and mobile; web and mobile remain in beta, with availability depending on the plan.

Connected folders are not uploaded wholesale: tasks fetch needed file copies, deleted with the session under Anthropic’s retention policy. Local-file access still requires the desktop app to be open and the session to have started on desktop. Scheduled tasks also move to the cloud, subject to that condition when using local files. Model-improvement use follows privacy settings. Claude Code remains an option for local execution, but existing projects and scheduled tasks do not transfer.
