Shopify adds checkout tools for browser agents, with buyer confirmation required

WebMCP lets browser agents read and update Shopify checkouts and continue the shopping journey. Buyers must confirm the order and total, while payment challenges and some checkout types still require direct interaction.

Shopify added WebMCP checkout support on September 28. Compatible browser agents can read the current checkout, update details such as addresses, delivery options and discounts, and submit an authorized order. Alongside existing storefront and cart tools, this extends assistance from product discovery to order confirmation. It uses the same checkout state the buyer sees and requires no additional merchant configuration.

Before submission, the agent must show the current order and total and obtain permission; a changed total requires renewed confirmation. Shop Pay login, 3D Secure challenges and checkout-extension interactions return control to the buyer. The tools can select an existing saved Shop Pay card but do not accept new card details; buyers handle other payment choices on the checkout page.

The update applies to WebMCP-capable agents operating in the buyer’s browser, rather than instantly enabling shopping in every AI chat product. Exclusions include B2B, embedded or mobile-SDK checkouts, merchandise from another shop, draft orders and order edits. Standard three-page checkout is excluded unless the buyer uses Shop Pay. Server-based agents use a separate Checkout MCP route.
