Meta brings voice-driven photorealistic “Hologram” call avatars to Ray-Ban Display glasses, starting in US WhatsApp Early Access this fall
At Connect 2026, Meta announced Hologram for its Meta Ray-Ban Display smart glasses: after a short self-capture in the Meta AI app, users get a photorealistic digital version of their face that the other person sees on calls made from the glasses. Meta says the hologram is driven entirely by the user’s voice, with the model inferring expressions from what they say and how they say it; it begins rolling out in Early Access on WhatsApp to Meta Ray-Ban Display users in the US later this fall.

Meta says glasses are good for hands-free calls but the other person cannot see your face; Hologram fills that gap without propping up or holding a phone. According to IT之家, first-time setup in the Meta AI phone app asks users to turn their head and smile, then answer open-ended questions at some length while the system captures facial expressions and speech to train and tune the Hologram model, also recording clothing and background; creation takes a few minutes and the hologram is generated after server-side processing. On calls, the other person sees an AI-generated face rather than a camera feed.
IT之家 reports that the glasses version runs on a real-time generative diffusion model on Meta’s servers, takes audio from the glasses’ microphones as input and streams 2D video to the other caller, with expressions generated mainly from voice changes. It says the current version still has flaws: the figure’s size can differ slightly from life, details such as the eyes can look rough, and the avatar distorts if the user leans too far sideways. IT之家 also says Quest headsets and a new slim headset will support Hologram in a life-size 3D form; Meta’s announcement gives a rollout only for Ray-Ban Display and does not mention Quest.
At the same event Meta said Meta Ray-Ban Display is expanding to five markets—the UK, Canada, France, Italy and Germany—with online ordering: US online ordering began that day, sales began that day in Canada and the UK, and pre-orders open progressively in France, Italy and Germany ahead of availability on October 13. The glasses will also get voice-requested cycling and public-transit directions, starting later this month in the US and Canada.
