OpenAI to acquire developer tools startup Pierre and fold its code storage service into Codex
OpenAI announced on 4 November that it will acquire Pierre Computer Company to expand Codex’s tools for building, understanding and reviewing code; terms were not disclosed. Pierre runs Code Storage, a cloud service for storing code written by AI agents, and makes the open-source Trees and Diffs libraries that Codex already uses for browsing files and reviewing changes.

According to SiliconANGLE, Pierre’s cloud service lets AI agents store the code they generate along with related files such as software licences and interface design elements, with built-in Git support. Pierre says it helped customer Lovable cut code retrieval latency by about 70%. Trees powers a searchable, drag-and-drop folder sidebar in Codex, and Diffs highlights the exact lines that changed.
Under OpenAI’s plan, Trees and Diffs will remain available under an open-source licence after the deal closes, the features of Pierre’s paid code hosting service will move into Codex, and the team will help OpenAI ship new products, with a focus on streamlining agent workflows built on Git. SiliconANGLE notes that observers see the deal as a challenge to Microsoft’s GitHub in the era of AI agents.
OpenAI had described Pando, its in-house source control backend, on Monday (2 November). The openai.com announcement returned 403 to our direct fetch, so these details rely on SiliconANGLE’s report.
